IL FESTIVAL BEAT DIVENTA MAGGIORENNE
È strano parlarne in questi termini, ma qualcuno col Festival Beat ci è cresciuto.
Alcuni dei suoi frequentatori, al momento della prima edizione, erano ancora in fasce. Non c’era internet e i cellulari erano grandi come caldaie: una vita fa.
Il Festival Beat oggi compie 18 anni ma non li dimostra. È sempre stata la sua forza, quella di anteporre l’entusiasmo al mestiere, scelta che l’ha preservato dall’invecchiamento precoce e dalla routine.
Quest’anno il Festival diventa maggiorenne e invece che guardarsi indietro rilancia con spregiudicatezza: per l’edizione numero 18 arrivano i Sonics.
Proprio loro, i padri del punk, gente che nei primi anni sessanta faceva ballare i ragazzi e terrorizzava i genitori: di meglio non si poteva fare, per celebrare questa ricorrenza. I Sonics sono il sigillo di prestigio ad una manifestazione che ha saputo rinnovarsi e far parlare di sé (anche all’estero) senza mai prendersi troppo sul serio: una formula vincente, come dimostra il suo successo.
La presenza della leggenda Sonics fa dell’edizione numero 18 la più eclatante di sempre ma non si tratta dell’unica eccellenza in cartellone. Ci sono (scusate se è poco) i Gravedigger Five di Leighton Koizumi, icona incontrastata del garage-punk USA dei mid-eighties, c’è l’atteso ritorno di Scanna coi suoi Pamela Tiffins, uno che il Festival lo conosce bene, avendolo inaugurato. E tante altre bands, italiane e straniere (come sempre nella giusta dose tra vecchio e nuovo, tra nomi consolidati e altri in ascesa) che fanno del diciottesimo Festival Beat un evento impedibile.
Chi si ricorda la prima edizione, quando nel cortile assolato di quella piccola palestra di Castel San Giovanni i Mofos aprivano ufficialmente il Festival?
Era il 27 giugno del 1993 e forse nessuno in quel momento immaginava che negli anni centinaia di gruppi si sarebbero avvicendati su quel palco, grandi e piccoli, miti e meteore, pezzi di storia e bands nate e scomparse nell’arco di una stagione.
E nessuno (questa volta senza “forse”) immaginava che ci saremmo ritrovati ancora insieme, tanti anni dopo, a festeggiare la maggiore età di una manifestazione nata giovane e rimasta tale.
Invece è successo e adesso siamo tutti qui, a Salsomaggiore, pronti a fare festa: CENTO DI QUESTI GIORNI, FESTIVAL BEAT!

THE FESTIVAL BEAT COMES OF AGE!

It might sound strange, but there are folks who’ve grown up with the “Festival Beat”.
Some of those who turn up every year were in nappies when the first edition was held!
There was no such thing as the Internet, and mobile phones were the size of boilers. Yep, we’re talking about a long time ago.
Today the “Festival Beat” is going on 18 years old, but it’s still looking fine. Its strongpoint has always been its preference for enthusiasm over craft, a strategy that has prevented it from aging before its time and helped it avoid any accusations of dreariness.
The festival is coming of age this year, and instead of admiring its past, it’s looking towards the future with ever greater zeal: edition number 18 sees the arrival of the Sonics.
Yes, you heard me correctly: the fathers of punk, a band that got the kids dancing back in the sixties but terrorised their parents. Without a doubt, the best possible way to celebrate such an anniversary.
The Sonics are a mark of excellence for an event that has shown a remarkable knack of finding new vitality and capturing the attention of everyone (not just here in Italy either), without ever taking itself too seriously: a winning formula, as confirmed by its success.
The presence of the illustrious Sonics makes edition number 18 the most extraordinary of the lot… but it’s not the only name of note on the card. We’ve got (wait for it…) the Gravedigger Five captained by Leighton Koizumi, undisputed icon of mid-eighties American garage-punk; then there’s the much-awaited return of Scanna and his Pamela Tiffins, a guy who knows this festival inside-out, having been present at the unveiling.
And there are umpteen other bands, both Italian and foreign (the usual mix of old and new, some established and others on the rise) that make this eighteenth “Festival Beat” an appointment not to be missed.
Who remembers the first ever edition, when the Mofos officially opened the festival in the sunlit courtyard of that tiny gymnasium at Castel San Giovanni?
It was June 27th 1993, and perhaps nobody could have imagined that hundreds of groups, would subsequently grace that stage: the great and the not-so-great; some legendary and others that were just passing through; some destined to make history and others that formed and then broke up in a short space of time.
And nobody (without the “perhaps” this time) would have dared predict that we’d be back many years later to celebrate the coming-of-age of an event that started out young and stayed that way.
But that’s exactly what has happened, and now we’re all here at Salsomaggiore to celebrate: MANY HAPPY RETURNS, FESTIVAL BEAT!
